We all often crave something sweet. Having control over your cravings is indeed difficult to achieve. While it can be difficult to completely eliminate sugar from your diet, it is possible to find a guilt-free substitute.

But first — let’s dive into the reasons why you should slow down from sugary foods every day.

Health issues and problems can be triggered

Excessive sugar intake can cause a lot of health problems. The following health issues can be triggered and worsened by sugar:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Heart problems

Causes spikes and fast drains in energy and moods throughout the day

Sugars — when consumed excessively can cause fast drains in your energy and moods. Instead, try to opt for energy-sustaining foods instead of sweets.

The following foods can drain your energy:

  • White bread, pasta, rice
  • Breakfast cereals, yogurt, and other sugar-added foods
  • Alcohol
  • Coffee
  • Energy drinks
  • Fried and fast foods

After finishing a cup of your favorite coffee, are you feeling shaky, anxious, and nervous the whole day? That’s probably due to caffeine and added sugars. Your anxiety loves sugar so better lessen your intake.

One study published in 2017 found that consuming a diet high in sugar can increase the chances of incident mood disorders in men, and recurrent mood disorders in both men and women.

A more recent 2019 study found that regular consumption of saturated fats and added sugars were related to higher feelings of anxiety in adults over age 60.

Can cause restless sleep

Did you know that sugar can cause sleep disturbances?

When blood sugar levels are high, your kidneys will overwork — causing you to urinate more often. During the nighttime, these frequent trips to the bathroom lead to disrupted sleep. High blood sugar may also cause headaches, thirst, and tiredness that can interfere with your sleep.

These are some of the possible harmful effects of sugar. There are more, but the bottom line is, you shouldn’t take your sugar intake for granted. Try to lessen your sugary treats at home, one at a time.
